Device to detect Hail storm?

Post by Davste »

Hey, I'm new here :)

I am currently doing a project which involves detecting a hail storm. I mean detecting the actual, physical impact of hail (not connecting to a weather forecasting station).
Is there a specific approach or sensor you could recommend?

Thanks!

How about a box with a microphone inside and one of the box a metal plate. I'm thinking something along the lines of thin aluminum sheet. I know that hail makes a LOT of noise when it strikes a metal roof like on a pole building. You should be able to use a threshold detector to filter out background noise. I'm sure the sould of hail hitting will be MUCH louder than other stuff.

I've never seen a commercial "hail detector"... So I think it will take some experimentation to get it right.
