Magic blue smoke patch
I think this should get me nominated for a magic blue smoke patch. I was working with a PWM IC and reached blindly for a nob and turned the wrong one. I heard a relay click in my power supply, realized I hadn't set my current limit and POOF! that was the end of my testing for the night. HA

Good one, not only did you let the smoke out the IC, but you let it out of the breadboard too. That's a two-fer! Still, you really aren't qualified for a Blue Heart until you've let smoke out of at least 5 of the following: IC, resistor, transistor, microcontroller, wall wart, multimeter, PC motherboard, transformer, electrolytic cap and a screw driver (don't ask). Oak leaf clusters for explosions, oscilloscopes, soldering irons and microcontroller programmers. Order of distinction for using high voltage to "fix" an internal layer short in a proto PCB (long story there...).

No points for magic smoke from LEDs?
Also, I think bonus points should be awarded for actual flame from a component. I know someone who managed to make a hard drive spontaneously combust during a PC repair job.

I was quite shocked how much smoke came out of my 4017 IC i blew during a school project, wish i got a picture of that lol.

Yeah, LEDs would be fine too but that's like a first step up from newbee. Nah, who needs a resistor to drop 120VAC?
I'm partial to explosions. About 15 years ago I dropped a screw onto a hot PC motherboard. It shorted something out and a chip actually blew up and shot a chunk of plastic about 3 feet in the air. There was a nice pop (like popcorn) and a quick flash. Scared d'sheet out of me.

I'd like to qualify, but no smoke yet.
I might have been close once working with UV-erasable windowed EPROMs. Shut off the power real fast when I realized I was seeing light through the little paper label over the chip window. I had plugged the chip in the wrong way around, reversing positive and negative supply. The working parts of the chip are separated from the substrate by a big diode (like, 1/8" square? bigger?) Forward bias that and the current flows. Evidently it flowed enough that the wire leads from the pins to the chip became incandescent. Plugged in the right way, the chip seemed like it might be working, but we retired it anyway.
But no smoke.
