5V LED strip for use with USB

Post by wesg »

I'm looking to build a DIY version of the Antec Bias Lighting system Amazon Link because Amazon doesn't ship this product to Canada. I've assembled a small box that connects to USB with a switch, but the LED strip I purchased from eBay seems to be 12V. Are there any flexible LED strips around that can be powered by USB? I have two monitors and want to back light both. If not, I suppose my alternative is to use a relay or something to trigger the lights when the computer turns on.

There is also an LED system from IKEA that I might consider hacking up.

Our digital-addressable strips are 5v. As are the pixel strands. These are the ones we use in our Adalight project.

The limitation for any LED strip driven from a USB port will be the current. USB will supply up to 500 mA. Many strips will draw more than that if driven to full intensity.
