When you have an arduino project with the lpd8806 RGB strip and you go to hook it up to your benchtop power supply, I suggest using +5V and ground for your power connections. Using +5V and -12V is *not* a good choice.

It trashed the Arduinno, but amazingly the last 20 of the 32 LEDs on the RGB strip survived having 17V across them.

I have often found that the most expensive parts die first in order to save the least expensive parts. How noble of them.

Yup that's totally true. The corollary to that is the amount of blue smoke released is inversely proportional to the device's cost.
