Diode junction gap falloff rate is variant to reflected energy from target.
Targets reflected energy depends on absorbtion by target,
thus energy on bandgap changes predictably depending on target bit state.

You detect the bit state by actually writing to the bit, and then monitoring its fall off rate.
(to read what was already on the magnetic platter, prior to bit write)
