Help switching data lines

Post by Franklin97355 »

I am trying to create a charging and syncing cart for our school and need some help picking the right chip to switch the data lines (D+, D-) from the charger to the sync cable. It's been a while since I've done any design and I don't know what is out there these days. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Without knowing any details about your circuits on either end, may I suggest that you see if transmission gates (CMOS Analog Switch) are suitable for your application? You can start by reading about them and go from there. Here is a helpful application note and selection guide:

Please let us know if this helps. Good luck!

I'm curious about what you are trying to do. Sync and charge can be done in one connection. Maybe a description of your sync/charge cart would help me understand better.

The school district is embracing the Apple iPad as a tool for instruction in several instances here and I'm trying to come up with a way to charge at high power and sync (not necessaraly at the same time) a cart of 40 without having to rely on the teacher to plug in the correct cable for each task. I'll check out those links, thanks.

It seems that Apple may have already addressed this problem:
Apple iPad Learning Labs
An Apple iPad Learning Lab streamlines the management of classroom sets of iPad devices. Each lab can store, charge, and sync up to 30 iPad devices and has room for a MacBook computer. The cart rolls easily around campus, so multiple classes can benefit, and it can be locked to secure the devices when they’re not in use. Instead of students visiting a lab, the lab is brought into the classroom.
