Help with LED Pixels strand, WS2801 (36mm) and smd 5630

Postby julesm » Mon Nov 26, 2012 12:09 pm

Hello All,

I am working on a project to build a large led pixel strand of 90 pixels that I can control individually (on/off and dimmable)
I have bought all items recommended in this: http://learn.adafruit.com/36mm-led-pixels/overview (really to get me started), but I would really like to have Pure white smd 5630 leds
because they are far brighter and white.
I have bought some strip like this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/63388 ... Strip.html
mainly to experiment with, I have 2 strips of this with 300 leds+ resistors on each now, Is there any way that I can replace the colored leds?
or maybe use each 'pixel' to control a separate unit with a small cluster of these white leds?
I am not all that experienced with micro-controllers but I have some basic skills in electronics.
Thanks

Jules

The 5630 strip does not have addressable LED drivers, so you can't control these individually. You can dim the whole strip using PWM and a transistor, but that's about it.

Thanks for the reply,
I know I cannot control the strip, I meant to possibly remove the leds and resistors and use them to replace the rgb leds (and corresponding resistors)
I have since read that the led boards have been filled with resin so maybe that is just too complicated.
All I am really trying to do is create a strand of addressable 5630 leds similar to the strand of 36mm rgb led modules.
I am not an expert so I was hoping I could use the rgb strand and just alter it but now I am thinking I may have to build my own custom modules from scratch...

Perhaps I'm on the wrong forum... maybe someone could point me to one that could help?
I have just realized you don't even sell ws2801 chips so maybe I have come to the completely wrong place...
I have seen loads of links for led strand projects pointing to this place so I though there may be some with modifications, is this the case or not?
Thanks

This sucks, I just spent $150 on components from your site and I don't even get a reply to my post

To an outside observer, it would appear that you bought some stuff here, but you are now looking for help with something else. It seemed like you realized that trying to remove/replace the LEDs from the product you bought wasn't going to be a fruitful path, so now you're asking about building something from scratch. The non-staff folks who frequent these fora are generally helpful and patient in my experience, but can't always answer every query.
