RF transmitter and directional receiver

Post by nmiller »

I am looking to find out if you know where I can find plans on creating a RF directional antenna receiver and transmitter to find the location of the RF transmitter that would be transmitting every second. I would like build a transmitter that runs off a 1.5v with a range of 200-500 yards. I would like to build a receiver that runs of a 9v.

Lol not much info what are you looking for? Get an sdr and made a cantenna or some other easy to make directional antenna.

Adafruit has an sdr for sale

Head over to Talking Electronics and look around: http://www.talkingelectronics.com/te_in ... index.html There are several FM transmitter projects there.

This one comes close to matching your specs: http://www.talkingelectronics.com/proje ... sp-P1.html

A direction receiver is all in the antenna design. Do a web search on "radio direction finding" to learn more.

I have checked online and found these results.
http://www.picaxeforum.co.uk/showthread ... r-receiver
http://blog.solidremote.com/post/direct ... eiver.aspx
http://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/showthread.php?t=7643
But all results I found seems a little bit complicated and expensive, are there any cheaper solutions around? I know this might be hard to find due to the uni-directional nature of RF transmitter.

Not so expensive if you build the antenna yourself and it is not that hard to do.
What frequency are your transmitter/Receiver?

Here are some links that should be helpful (and help you with additional web searches).

http://www.open-circuit.co.uk/tape.php

Notice these are all Ham Radio based web sites. So also look into other Ham Radio information on transmitters, receivers, antennas and how they work and how to build.

It's not going to be easy since you'll have to get a directional receiver. Design a phase-array antenna with small RF switches that you can control using a micro-controller. By changing the positions of the switching, you'll essentially be changing the antenna characteristics and moving it around if different directions. Once your scan is finished, select the region the gave you the best signal strengths and do a finer scan. Using and SDR is an addional option that you can explore.
