Extra-long force-sensitive resistor

Post by varunboriah »

Hi,

I am working on a project to detect respiration rate when a user is lying in bed. A sensor would be placed on top of the mattress and the user would lie on top of the sensor and detect chest wall movement. I am aware of the use of piezoelectric force sensors (http://www.beddit.com/) to monitor this, but was wondering if FSRs would also perform adequately. The form factor of the extra-long FSR looks ideal and I haven't been able to find a long piezo sensor.

Thanks!

Varun

I don't know that anyone has tested them in that type of application. One possible issue is that they tend to have some 'memory' if they are compressed for a long time. But the force will be distributed over a large area, so it may not be a problem. It would take some experimentation to find out.
