Looking for a small passive speaker

Post by user9333 »

Hey everyone. i'm working on a project that requires a speaker. The speaker needs to be able to play sound through an AUX cable and doesn't need to be that loud but does need to be fairly small and fairly cheap. As well as this it needs to be passive so cant use a power source or at the very least use a USB power source.

I was wondering if there was a product on the adafruit store like this that i'v missed as I'v had a look for one? If not I was also wondering if there were any tutorials online (i'v had a look but cant find any really helpful ones) that could show me how to hack one up or if any other stores sold something similar.

EDIT: I saw this item on the adafruit store (https://www.adafruit.com/products/1890) and something like it would be great but im not to sure if it would require external power and if it could be connected to an AUX adapter of some sorts.

Thanks for your time,
Tekk3y

What is the source of the sound signal you want to play?

Im using a raspberry Pi and just wanted a simple way to play a few bits of audio.
If that helps, thanks.

You might get a tiny bit of sound out of it. But the RPi audio out is not really designed for driving speakers directly.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. Do you know of any adafruit tutorials or products that help connect a speaker like that to an AUX port?

Thanks again,

Without knowing the internal design of the RPi audio out circuit, I would recommend against it. Most such outputs are designed for driving relatively high impedance loads. Driving a low-impedance load like a speaker could eventually overheat and possibly damage the circuit.

Right... Well then back to my original question do you know of any mini speakers that can be powered say of one of the raspberry pi usb ports? I noticed these (https://www.adafruit.com/products/1363)on the adafruit store although they are slightly to big for what i need.

Thanks again.

You could do it with one of these: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1552
It will run from the 5v on the USB port and can drive one or two small speakers such as the one you linked earlier.

It is pretty simple. Connect the USB plug for power and the 3mm jack for the audio and you are ready to go.
