What's this peice called?

Post by Varosion »

I was recently soldering my CC3000 whenever this piece popped off the board. I'm looking to buy a new one, but I have no idea what it's called!

Bonus points if you can link me to a place where I can buy the piece.

It's a 10 µF ceramic capacitor.
There's another one on the other side of the regulator tab in parallel so it's not drop-dead necessary.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to replace it.
Here's one source: http://www.jameco.com/1/3/10uf-smd-capacitor
Adafruit might be able to help you also.

Yes! Thank you so much. The reason I need to replace it is because whenever I plug it in, the Arduino self-shuts down, so I just assume replacing this piece will fix the CC3000.

If you still have the part you can probably solder it back on.

I'd go with a new cap. Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors (MLCCs) are kind of fragile, and microscopic cracks will mess up the capacitance.

You can rework them with hot air, but if you use a soldering iron there's a fairly good chance part of it will fall off before you get it soldered back down again.

For no more than they cost ($5 for 100 at Mouser) it's less hassle to to pop in a new one:

I just got a package with these in it: http://www.taydaelectronics.com/capacit ... citor.html
And they didn't seem to work, so I'll attempt to fix it with that recommended piece. I'm not even sure why I'm going through the trouble to fix this though because I've already purchased another one, and I have it working.

The ones you linked to are 10 picofarads.. about a million times less capacitance than the 10 microfarad cap which goes in that spot.

I doubt that the missing capacitor is the reason for the "Arduino self-shutting down".
You might have caused a short circuit with your soldering or else the power supply is inadequate.
